AppLookout Origins

I’ve been an independent app developer since 2013. In that time, I’ve learned a lot about developing and publishing apps, as well as running an app business.

One day when I discovered another app on the App Store was using the name of my app that I had trademarked, I had to figure out how to handle that. Eventually, searching the app stores every month or so for the various app names I had trademarked became tedious. So I sought out a service that would notify me when apps were added to the various app stores that used my trademarked terms. When I couldn’t find such a service, I decided to fill that gap and create one. And AppLookout was born.

While talking to other developers about AppLookout, I’ve come to realize that many people haven’t thought about trademarking their apps’ names.

I hope to use this blog to help inform the independent app development community about trademarks: their costs and benefits, what to do if you find apps violating them, and any other knowledge that others might find useful.

Let’s get started.
